Questions

What is VWM?

VWM, the volume-weighted move, is the day's percentage change in the Hang Seng Index multiplied by the turnover ratio: that day's HKEX turnover divided by the average of the previous 20 trading days. A 1% rise on twice the usual turnover scores 2; the same rise on half the usual turnover scores 0.5. In the app, About → What VWM tells you explains how to read the bars, the strength bands and the 5-day average.

When do new figures appear?

On trading days, in the evening Hong Kong time, after HKEX publishes its daily quotations. The app checks for new figures each time you open it. There are no figures for weekends and Hong Kong public holidays.

Where do the figures come from?

Index closes and market turnover come from the daily quotations published by Hong Kong Exchanges and Clearing (HKEX). Older index closes come from Eastmoney and are checked against HKEX. The figures may be late or contain errors.

Can I use red for a rise?

Yes. In About, under Chart colours, choose "Red for a rise, green for a fall" (the mainland China convention) instead of the Hong Kong convention.

Does it work offline?

The app keeps the last download on your phone and shows it when there is no connection. It updates again the next time it can reach the internet.

Is this investment advice?

No. HSI Trend shows public market figures for information only. Nothing in it is a recommendation to buy or sell anything.
